With proper care, your board can last a lifetime. Actual maintenance needs will vary depending on use. Here’s our step-by-step guide to keeping yours in use for years to come:
Cleaning:
After each use, wash the cutting board with warm, soapy water, or simply brush off with a dry cloth.
Use a sponge or soft cloth to gently scrub the surface.
Avoid soaking the cutting board in water or placing it in the dishwasher, as excessive moisture can cause warping or cracking.
Drying:
Towel dry the cutting board immediately after washing to remove excess moisture.
Allow the cutting board to air dry completely in an upright position before storing it.
Sanitizing:
Regularly sanitize the cutting board to prevent bacterial growth.
Apply a solution of equal parts water and white vinegar to the cutting board and let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing thoroughly with water.
Oil Maintenance:
Apply food-grade mineral oil or a specialized cutting board oil to the entire surface of the board, including the sides and edges.
Use a clean cloth to spread a thin, even layer of oil over the wood.
Allow the oil to penetrate the wood for at least 4-6 hours, or overnight.
Wipe off any excess oil with a dry cloth.
Repeat Oil Treatment:
Repeat the oil treatment process monthly, or when the cutting board appears dry or feels rough to the touch.
Regular oiling helps to nourish the wood, prevent it from drying out, and maintain its natural luster.
Avoid Excessive Moisture and Heat:
To prevent warping or cracking, avoid exposing the cutting board to excessive moisture or heat.
Do not submerge the board in water or leave it in a damp environment for extended periods.
Avoid placing hot pots or pans directly onto the cutting board surface, as this can cause scorching or damage to the wood.
